Speedbump #1

The concrete slab has become a common theme in my
work. At first I thought it was merely an outgrowth of
the fundamental human fear of death we all share,
and it disturbed me slightly when I recognized it
again and again in my own work. That is, until I
revisited my childhood home, a morose place of great
anxiety and fear. I took a walk around the block and
recognized the image from my youth. Directly under a
streetlight behind the house, there has always been a
big, yellow, concrete speedbump, about 3'X8' in size.
Looking for all the world like a medical examiner's
palette, this image lay dormant in my memory
until I started to build relationships between people
and objects in my work. I was astounded by this
discovery, and someday hope to work directly with this
icon of my youth.
