Fire Down Below
When I first saw the amazing underwater studies of the
San Francisco Ballet Company by photographer
Howard Schatz, what I was immediately impressed
with the water's effect on light. When printed with the
skin tones in mind, the color balance of the
water-filtered light becomes very cold. I imitated
this effect when shooting this image. It was shot
in the basement of another model in Kalamazoo, MI,
and the beams, pipes, and angularity remind
me of the cargo hold of an ocean-going vessel.
